We need allies to join us in advocating for better accessibility and awareness of diverse needs in our communities and workplaces! Allies are encouraged to join our DAIS Google Group. This group acts as our email list for things like learning about disability issues, posting announcements, looking for resources, and keeping up on DAIS activities. This group includes both disabled members and allies.
Allies are encouraged to join our DAIS Google Group/email list, which includes both disabled members and allies. This list is for things like learning about disability issues, posting announcements, looking for resources, and keeping up on DAIS activities. You can send to the group by emailing email@example.com. To join from a non-gmail address, email firstname.lastname@example.org. Some institutional emails cannot be added this way- if you have trouble, email email@example.com we’ll add you from our end.
While we appreciate and are encouraged by the support of our friends and colleagues, our internal online network is not for allies. Disability is a very sensitive topic and not all members are out about their conditions, thus it’s important to maintain that as an environment where people feel safe to talk openly. Mixing personal and professional life also means we have to be vigilant about potential harm to people’s careers that could result from allowing a membership that is very broad. However, allies will still be able to meet and interact with disabled members through the Google Group!
Want to help out?
We are still getting things up and running. If you’d like to help you can:
- Spread the word about DAIS by sending an announcement to colleagues at your workplace or institution. We mean it! You can even use this blurb.
- Sign up for our email list.
- Donate a few bucks to help cover the cost of our website, network subscription, and eventual non-profit filing by contacting our Executive Director
- Want to donate time? Some things are hard to delegate at the moment, but you could: draw us a nicer logo, organize an in-person or virtual social event via the DAIS email list, or collect links for resources that can go below and email them to our administrator along with a one sentence description. Down the road, guidance from folks with experience with filing for non-profit status will be appreciated. If you have other skills or ideas, get in touch.
[Under construction! Will offer links relating to self education, work accommodations, conference accessibility, etc.]
